Probably mostly because there's a lion at the top. I've read individual fairy tales by the Grimm "bru6ners," but not the entire collection. Some fairy tales are sincerely dark and cruel; what is up with that?

Apparently grownups liked to scare the stuffing out of kids back in the day. I recall reading some fairy tales that had my hair standing on end. The illustrations were pretty gruesome too.
I think those stories were written when life was dark and grim.
