Maybe You Have to Live Here

Going through the Kroger app to make my grocery list, I come across this:

The thought that someone would need to buy bacon grease is fully weird to me.  Even a True Non-Cook like me has a supply of bacon grease in my refrigerator.  Sure, you buy bacon because it's, uh, bacon, but an extra plus is then you get a cooking basic, too.

Maybe it's just a Southern thing, but bacon grease is used to flavor some dishes, used as a base for others, used as a frying medium, and, at least in my childhood home, as a salad "dressing". *  Not having a "thing" of bacon grease is unheard of.

Is this just an us down here  phenomenon?

I’m a northerner; my mom always had a jar of bacon grease in the back of the refrigerator. I don’t have one myself because it’s just not something I cook with but if I ever thought I’d need it I wouldn’t hesitate to start my own jar.

I love bacon but don't remember ever cooking with its grease; my Mom did!

I just saw a recipe where someone was spreading that on bread for some reason or another. We didn't keep our bacon grease but when my mom would fry an egg in it it was heaven. I only eat fake bacon now. Been a vegetarian since the late 60's.
