New Thing


I tried a persimmon today.  Before today, I wouldn't have been able to point out a persimmon if lots of fruit were arrayed before me.  I ordered one as part of my latest Misfits box, and I don't know if the one they sent (and I tried) was ripe or what.  My overall review: meh.  Not awful, not astounding, but again, I might not have eaten this one at the height of its flavor.

Be aware that there are two varieties of persimmons available in the US and they are very different. The one you had is Fuyu and tends to be pretty crisp. The other is a soft one called Hachiya which is really the best-tasting as far as I'm concerned but a lot more complicated to get. They need to be just ripe enough so that the inside is like custard. But they become over-ripe pretty much over night. (I have found pears to be similar in this regard.) Hachiya have some other names I can't think of right now. If you find some fairly firm Fuyus they make pretty good pie; also the crisper ones are good in salads. A perfect Hachiya is a really lovely thing.
